Trafficking
Our mission at Starbucks Stops Trafficking is to combat human trafficking by empowering travelers to recognize and respond to potential trafficking situations effectively. Ultimately, we aim to decrease the number of people trafficked through Western airports.

Trafficking
Why starbucks?
Modern Slavery has reached unprecedented levels, with over 49.6 million people falling victim to human trafficking. Alarmingly, 60% of this trafficking occurs through international airports (Reed, 2018). Given that Starbucks is the largest coffee distributor on airports globally (Deyn, 2022), we recognize our responsibility in addressing the issue of human trafficking and are committed to taking action.
What is Human Trafficking
Human trafficking involves recruiting, transporting, harbouring, or receiving people through the use of force and threats. The aim of the trafficker is to exploit the victim (What Is Human Trafficking? | Homeland Security, n.d.).
Hard to catch
Victims of human trafficking, threatened into compliance, often avoid reaching out for help, complicating recognition efforts, especially when they are unaware of their own destiny they are facing. (Identifying Victims of Human Trafficking: Inherent Challenges and Promising Strategies From the Field, 2008) .
Responsibility for the Airport
60% of the trafficking goes through international airports (Reed, 2018). For a lot of victims the airport is the last place of contact with society. At the moment they leave the airport with the trafficker they are lost from society, and it can take years before they are saved, if so (Human Trafficking (HT), n.d.).

Vulnerable and false pretenses
People in vulnerable situations, such as pregnancy, poverty, or loneliness, are approached with false pretenses.
Warmth and wealth
The traffickers pretend like they are can give the victim a better life and convince them by luxury and emotional support.
Moving away
After a while they convince the victim to move out of city, state or country, because they will get a better life somewhere else.
Hopeless and powerless
The victim is often unable to speak the language or lacking legal documents. At this point, the trafficker seizes control of money and passport, leaving the victim powerless.
Final Destination
The final destination of the victim differs per case. But they often have to work for money, are forced into criminality or in prostitution.
What is a trafficking situation?

Systemmap
of human trafficking around Schiphol
Starbucks stop trafficking
Schiphol already has some systems in place to combat trafficking. The so called ‘Sluisteam’ is trained on recognizing human trafficking and communicates with different departments like the dedicated gate control, immigration department, customs and Comensha to find victims.
But although this system map is very big, one group is not mentioned at all: the travellers. Unfortunately, Schiphol cannot use millions of people to combat trafficking. Even though they could have a big impact, they just don't have the knowledge to spot it. We want to assist Schiphol to let everyone help!
How awareness can help
Desired result
Many people, especially in Europe aren't aware of the big system of slavery that is still happening. In our rich countries people from poor countries get human trafficked and we don't know anything about it. With our interventions we want to enhance the knowledge of this problem and help people recognize these criminals and victims
By raising awareness of a lot of people that travel around the world. There will be a lot more eyes that can analyse and report the suspicious acts of the potential traffickers/victims. Every criminal getting caught is a couple of victims saved!
Video 3: Comensh's compaign to create awareness of human trafficking (here sex exploitation)
What is already being done
There are already many NGO's that try to create awareness for this subject (Comensha, Stop the traffik), but in Europe this awareness is still too low.
Stop the traffik use campaigns on social media to share with the at-risk groups how to avoid being trafficked. They also analyse data of trafficking to find hotspots, trends, networks etc. to prevent/cope with trafficking
Institutions like Comensha are helping victims to get their live together. They also facilitate campaigns to create awareness for professionals (people from the government or caregivers)
Barista game
Challenge your FRiends
This is a game where players get to experience what it is like to be a Starbucks barista. In this game participants are looking out at other travellers from the room inside the exhibit through a transparent screen. Superimposed customers will emerge from the crowd. They look exactly like the real people at Schiphol walking by. The players can serve these customers by dragging coffee to them. Participants can also work together to complete more orders.
Interface
Too busy to see
But something is off. Two of the customers act very unusual. Their communication is weird and one of them looks very upset. But because the players are so busy with their game, they probably don't notice anything.
Reveal
Did you see?
At the end of the short game, the screen will rewind to the beginning, and will reveal a human trafficking situation was playing in the background the whole time. The game makes people question if they would have spotted this situation in real life. After that, the screen will show some signs people could look out for to recognize trafficking along with more information about the problem.

Age
16-50 years old
We target people from ages 16 to 50. These are most of the people that are often in an airport. At the airport, they often feel bored and seek for excitement.
So, to gain attention we choose to make a game, because this is (especially at a airport where people have to wait for a long time) a great way to allure people to engage. Also, because the realism and unexpected turn the game has, the shock level will be much higher than a poster or video.

Impact
Impact
Our intervention will create a shock value with the people that play the game. We hope this shock value makes people start talking about this subject. Then, not only the game will create awareness, but also the people that played it will raise attention.
The more awareness, the more people will recognize the strange behaviour traffickers and victims show. The more people recognize those signs, the more people can report the suspicious acts to enforcers. This will cause more traffickers to get punished and many saved lives.
Aviation: The Near Future
Increased use of AI and biometric technology in airports such as will allow travelers to move more quickly through airport security, but brings with it less human to human interaction.
Automation
Automation of airport checkpoints, transportation and services will shape the future of air travel providing a smoother, seamless experience, reducing the amount of employees in customer service, another reduction in social contact.
Future tech utilization
For our Starbucks barista game, augmented reality technology will be used to improve the user impact of the message of the Starbucks interactive. The game will be put onto a transparent screen, in which the game’s characters will be superimposed into the airport’s crowd for an immersive and collaborative experience. With this collaboration, it will also promote more human to human interaction to combat the automation the future will bring.
The technological readiness of the augmented reality screen is currently relatively rudimentary in that it can only be used for short animations with limited interactivity, with the closest modern technology to this future concept being the BroadcastAR 2.0 screen by INDE. However, augmented reality technology is showing promising signs of rapid growth, making the AR interactive screen a feasible technology for delivering information in the near future.
Project Risks and Mitigation
Public Appeal
Instead of immediately presenting the heavy topic of human trafficking and presenting statistics like many programs use, we chose to mystify the game’s elements and message initially in order to attract more people who might turn away at the sight of overwhelming information. We hope that in doing so more people will be impacted by our message.
Younger Audiences
The topic of human trafficking may be disturbing for younger individuals. To ensure people aren’t blindsided by the revealing of the human trafficking problem, a mature content warning and description of the game’s content will be posted outside of the exhibition.
Privacy Risk
The Starbucks Stops Trafficking game involves the use of cameras to create the augmented reality element. While filming in a public place is within the law according to the Gemeente Amsterdam putting cameras outside of the exhibition creates the risk of discomfort of travelers. To combat this, the cameras will be discreet and unobtrusive, and an announcement informing the public that AI will be used to recognize human features in order to create the game’s visuals.
